Twenty years of persecution.
One afternoon of freedom.
Arrival · 10 December 2025 · Toronto Pearson International
Michael D’Souza and his teenage daughter Rochelle stepped off the plane in Toronto carrying two decades of Pakistani religious persecution. Waiting at the arrivals hall: cosponsors Cajie and Maria DeSouza, American supporter Christine Caviness, and her son-in-law Casey Chalk — author of The Persecuted, the book that told Michael’s story to American audiences.
For the first time in twenty years, they inhaled the scent of freedom.
Michael’s wife and two younger children remain in Pakistan as ICV processes their family reunification. They will be the next chapter.

The driver who survived an assassination — and outlasted exile.
Arrival · 11 July 2024 · After ten years in exile
On March 2, 2011, Gul Sher Murad was driving Shahbaz Bhatti through Islamabad when Taliban gunmen stepped into the road and opened fire. He survived. The terrorists then came for him — ordering him, under threat of death, not to testify. In 2013, he fled to Thailand, leaving behind his pregnant wife and four children. He had not met his youngest child.
Ten years apart from his family. Two ICV fundraisers. One reunion.
ICV raised the funds across two annual galas. Gul Sher landed in Toronto in July 2024. His wife and five children followed weeks later. He now speaks at ICV events and speaks up for other refugees — the living proof of what this organisation exists to do.

They knelt and kissed the ground.
Arrival · July 2023 · Toronto Pearson International
Tabeeta Gill’s 2021 blasphemy accusation in Pakistan made international headlines. She and her husband Sohail were hunted — first in Pakistan, then in the tenuous sanctuary of Dubai. When they and their two sons, Shaloom and Elisha, finally landed in Toronto, they fell to their knees at the airport lounge and kissed the ground.
Their sons, alert after a fourteen-hour flight, raced into the park behind their new home.
Within hours of arrival, the boys were exploring their new neighborhood. Tabeeta has since become a recurring presence at ICV events — performing at the Shahbaz Bhatti memorial and standing as a public witness to what religious persecution in Pakistan actually costs.

Twenty years. Three countries. One family finally together.
Arrival · 12 June 2024 · An Iraqi Assyrian reunion
Khalid Butrus spent two decades in exile — first Syria, then Lebanon — after fleeing Iraq as an Assyrian Christian. His parents had emigrated to Los Angeles long before. His sisters had built lives in Michigan. Every time he tried to join them, another war, another closed border, another visa denial.
His parents flew in from LA. His sisters drove up from Michigan. His cousin Mansour, a chef in Mississauga, threw a grand party.
For two hours, his family waited in Terminal 1 — as they had waited for twenty years. When Khalid finally walked out, the greeting was what you’d expect: shouts, embraces, tears of disbelief. Pastor Frank David, an ICV supporter, had postponed an overseas trip just to be there.
